Blurb

It’s bad enough to have to deal with evil, right?

But when it’s clever, unpredictable as hell, and has a not-so-helpful sense of humor, it can get downright annoying. Or deadly. Or end-of-the-world disastrous. Or other fun stuff like that.

I’ll be honest. I thought I was prepared to defend the City of Boston against magical sociopaths with questionable morals. Once I got the job, however, it took only about thirty seconds and one dead mentor for me to discover I was wrong. As it turns out, I’m pretty much undertrained, underqualified, and surprisingly unwelcome.

But when my best friend and an immortal warrior get abducted by the GoD of Evil as part of his highly-flawed world-peace plan, guess who’s the only one with a chance to save the day? Yeah. Me.

Which means, it’s time for me to find my inner badass.

Or die.

I prefer badass.

Review

P.B. Noble wanted nothing more than to be Boston’s ‘sentinel’. Being the person charged with protecting the city of Boston from magical accidents or evil.  That was until she was thrown into the job on the very day she was about to celebrate opening night of her club for magic folk with her best friend.  Now she’s got the job of stopping the supreme evil (named the MOFO of evil) from opening the portal and letting more creatures of darkness into the city.

I had real trouble rating this book.  The problem is, I really quite liked the characters.  They were fun and witty and the style of writing reminded me of other comedic-fantasy authors like Christopher Moore.  But, the storyline had such gaping holes.  There were too many major points that were explained away in the most ridiculous way (even for a book that was supposed to be a little ridiculous).  Some of the twists could have been really clever, but instead they were glossed over in a way that made them just seem silly.  The language used in the book also just tried way too hard to be cool, and ended up feeling juvenile, like a teenager seeing how many times they could swear in front of their parents to show they were ‘badass’.  Some of that can be funny and relatable, but 460 pages of it gets a bit old unfortunately.  But, like I said, I so enjoyed the characters!  I loved P.B. Noble’s flippancy in the face of disaster (even though she was quietly freaking out on the inside), her celebrity ex boyfriend who was conceited in an endearingly oblivious way, Sir Carmine the easily offended werewolf with strange morals and Thano, the sexy immortal warrior.  They were all fantastic and I wanted to read more about them!
