He will make me a killer.
Or he will have me killed.
That is my destiny.

Seventeen-year-old Marianne is fated to one day become the Viper, defender of the Twelve Isles.

But the reigning Viper stands in her way. Corrupt and merciless, he prowls the seas in his warship, killing with impunity, leaving only pain and suffering in his wake.

He’s the most dangerous man on the ocean . . . and he is Marianne’s father.

She was born to protect the islands. But can she fight for them if it means losing her family, her home, the boy she loves – and perhaps even her life?

A brave heroine. An impossible dilemma. An epic new fantasy trilogy set on the high seas.

Review

Thankyou to Hachette Australia for providing me with a copy of Viper, in exchange for an honest review.

You know what I love?  Pirate books that give you actual, bloodthirsty pirates.  You know what this book gave me?  EXACTLY THAT.  Viper was exciting, horrifying and took absolute joy in ripping my heart out on several occasions.

Marianne has been raised on the deadliest pirate ship on the seas.  Full of ruthless assassins, and her father, the most ruthless of them all.  Known as the Viper, he drives fear into the heart of everyone he meets, and he expects his daughter to do the same.  Marianne wants to learn how to heal, but there’s no room for that on her father’s ship.  Now that she’s no longer a child, she has started to see just how corrupt and dangerous her father is and knows that, although it seems impossible, she needs to find a way to stop him.

The adventure set out in Viper had my heart in my throat for almost the entire book.  Marianne’s father and his crew knew no bounds when it came to cruelty and it was often difficult to know who was trustworthy and who wasn’t.  I loved Marianne as a main character, and watching her grow from a fearful child into a determined woman, willing to risk it all.

The writing was fast paced and the action was brutal.  I was completely in love with this book from beginning to end and it’s going to be one of those series where I’ll be dying to get my hands on the next book!
