I’ve been chased my whole life. As a fugitive refugee in the territory controlled by the tyrannical Mercer corporation, I’ve always had to hide who I am. Until I found Excalibur.

Now I’m done hiding.

My name is Ari Helix. I have a magic sword, a cranky wizard, and a revolution to start.

When Ari crash-lands on Old Earth and pulls a magic sword from its ancient resting place, she is revealed to be the newest reincarnation of King Arthur. Then she meets Merlin, who has aged backward over the centuries into a teenager, and together they must break the curse that keeps Arthur coming back. Their quest? Defeat the cruel, oppressive government and bring peace and equality to all humankind.

No pressure.

Thankyou to Bloomsbury Publishing for providing me with a copy of Once & Future, in exchange for an honest review.

Ari has crash landed on Old Earth with her brother, after being chased from another planet by a corporation who wants her dead.  Before they take off again, she pulls a strange sword out of a tree, and if she thought she had problems before, they’re nothing compared to what’s about to come.

Once and Future is a gender-bent retelling of King Arthur, set in space.  To be honest, it took me until the halfway mark to actually get into the story.  So much happened in the first half, and it felt like we were kind of thrown into the deep end with not much in the way of world building, so I was playing catch up and detective to try and work out what was going on.  I loved the second half though, it was fun, tense and emotional and by then I was invested in the characters and their relationships.  I’m glad I preserved with it because I’d be mad if I’d missed that ending!

I really enjoyed the unique twist on the old tale of King Arthur and the many varied diverse characters included in the story. There were a lot of laughs and some great characters – Ari and Merlin included (and Val, I think he was my favourite of all).  There were several I felt like we didn’t quite get to know enough about though, and I wish we had.  I’m hoping their character arcs will continue to develop in the second book.  It’s one of those times I’m quite sure I’ll enjoy the second book more than the first, because the only real issue I had was trying to sort out the world building, as it was slowly built up over the course of the book.  Now that I know who and what everything is, I feel like I’ll be able to relax into the sequel!

  1. Its interesting that you didnt get into it until the 2nd half because I ended up dnfing about 40% into it…perhaps if I had of persevered I would have felt differently overall.

    1. I think that’s the reason I just can’t bring myself to DNF anything – just incase I like it at the end 😂 I’m always extra jaded if I push through and don’t like the end though!
