“Before, I was a million things. Now I’m only one. The Burned Girl.”

Ava Lee has lost everything there is to lose: Her parents. Her best friend. Her home. Even her face. She doesn’t need a mirror to know what she looks like–she can see her reflection in the eyes of everyone around her.

A year after the fire that destroyed her world, her aunt and uncle have decided she should go back to high school. Be “normal” again. Whatever that is. Ava knows better. There is no normal for someone like her. And forget making friends–no one wants to be seen with the Burned Girl, now or ever.

But when Ava meets a fellow survivor named Piper, she begins to feel like maybe she doesn’t have to face the nightmare alone. Sarcastic and blunt, Piper isn’t afraid to push Ava out of her comfort zone. Piper introduces Ava to Asad, a boy who loves theater just as much as she does, and slowly, Ava tries to create a life again. Yet Piper is fighting her own battle, and soon Ava must decide if she’s going to fade back into her scars . . . or let the people by her side help her fly.

Thank you so much to Simon & Schuster for having me on the Scars Like Wings tour, and for providing me with a copy of the book, in exchange for an honest review.

Ava suffered burns to 60% of her body when she lost her parents and best friend in a fire a year ago.  After a long and excruciating recovery, her doctor and aunt, who now cares for her, think it would be a good idea for Ava to go back to school.  Ava thinks this is the worst idea she’s ever heard.  When she can’t even look at her own face in the mirror, how is she going to walk down those high school halls?

Amid the starers, the gossiping whisperers and the outright horrible commenters, she meets Piper.  Piper was in a car accident a few months ago and is currently confined to a wheelchair. She is here to teach Ava how to battle the high school halls, mean girls and group therapy.  As long as Ava doesn’t ask about that night.  The night of the accident.  Because Piper’s confidence may not be as endless as she wants everyone to believe.

I absolutely devoured this book.  It made me cry, it made me rage and it showed me the world through they eyes of a burn survivor.  I just found this story to be so real, with writing that was equal parts heartbreaking and eye-opening.  There was even technical, medical information about recovery from severe burns included, which I found incredibly interesting (and incredibly heart wrenching).  This is not just a story about survival, it’s a story about accepting the past has changed, and finding a ‘new normal’.

If you’re looking for an emotional, ‘stand up and take notice’ book, I’d highly recommend giving this one a try, it is incredible!
