488 Rules for Life is Kitty Flanagan’s way of making the world a more pleasant place to live. Providing you with the antidote to every annoying little thing, these rules are not made to be broken.

488 Rules for Life is not a self-help book, because it’s not you who needs help, it’s other people. Whether they’re walking and texting, asphyxiating you on public transport with their noxious perfume cloud, or leaving one useless square of toilet paper on the roll, a lot of people just don’t know the rules.

But thanks to Kitty Flanagan’s comprehensive guide to modern behaviour, our world will soon be a much better place. A place where people don’t ruin the fruit salad by putting banana in it … where your co-workers respect your olfactory system and don’t reheat their fish curry in the office microwave … where middle aged men don’t have ponytails …

What started as a joke on Kitty Flanagan’s popular segment on ABC TV’s The Weekly, is now a quintessential reference book with the power to change society. (Or, at least, make it a bit less irritating.)

What people are (Kitty Flanagan is) saying about this book:

‘You’re welcome everyone.’

‘Thank god for me.’

‘I’d rather be sad and lonely, but right.’

‘There’s not actually 488 rules in here but it sure feels like it’.

Thank you so much to Allen & Unwin for providing me with a copy of Kitty Flanagan’s 488 Rules for Life, in exchange for an honest review.

Kitty Flanagan is an Aussie comedian, who would always make me laugh at her take on life, during her TV segments.  I knew I would love her book of rules, and, to be honest, I agreed with almost every one of them 😂  (except no gift registries for weddings, c’mon Kitty, I don’t want to have to put thought into a present, I just want to order it online from a shop, ok? 😄 and Gold Class movies with all their menu items are amazing. Full stop 😁)

With etiquette rules for everything from navigating the minefield of office interactions to fashion and going to the movies, Kitty has helpfully set out exactly how to make the world a less irritating place.  With plenty of tongue-in-cheek advice and even sealed sections, especially for the hard-core rule followers, I laughed out loud more than once and finished this book all in one sitting.

Among the humour, many of the rules will have you shaking your head in agreement and thinking of the very person you’d like to wave them in front of their nose.  Or maybe they’ll just have you shaking your head, depending on where you sit on the rules 😉

If you love dry wit and think the world would be a better place if people just followed the rules, Kitty’s book is for you!
