Caden Bosch is a brilliant high school student whose friends are starting to notice his odd behaviour.

Caden Bosch is designated the ship’s artist in residence to document the journey with images.

Caden Bosch pretends to join the school track team but spends his days walking for miles, absorbed by the thoughts in his head.

Caden Bosch is split between his allegiance to the captain and the allure of mutiny.

Thank you so much to Walker Books Australia for sending me a copy of Challenger Deep, in exchange for an honest review!

When I first started reading Challenger Deep I admit I was a little lost. I felt like I’d fallen down the rabbit hole and couldn’t quite find my way out. It seems to jump from real life to a dream, with our main character, Caden in the starring role. In the dreamlike sections, Caden is on a ship, with a captain, a parrot and a while host of other crew. In the other chapters he’s living his general life, going to school, seeing his friends etc. as the story progresses it becomes apparent that the story involving the ship is Caden’s descent into mental illness. As the storylines merge and blur, we see where reality crosses into the murky depths of his mind.
This book was utterly brilliant. It pulls us into a reality that is heart wrenching and all too real for some families. Although most of the story focuses on Caden’s struggle with his mental illness and the hospital he is treated in, we’re also given glimpses into the other patients and Caden’s family’s own fears and difficult decisions.
Neal Schusterman speaks from experience found within his own family, which brings an extra layer of emotion to the story. This is one I’d highly recommend everyone take the time to read!
