When Charlotte married the wealthy widower Paul, it caused a ripple of gossip in their small lakeside town. They have a charmed life together, despite the cruel whispers about her humble past and his first marriage. But everything starts to unravel when she discovers a young woman’s body floating in the exact same spot where Paul’s first wife tragically drowned.

At first, it seems like a horrific coincidence, but the stranger in the lake is no stranger. Charlotte saw Paul talking to her the day before, even though Paul tells the police he’s never met the woman. His lie exposes cracks in their fragile new marriage, cracks Charlotte is determined to keep from breaking them in two.

As Charlotte uncovers dark mysteries about the man she married, she doesn’t know what to trust—her heart, which knows Paul to be a good man, or her growing suspicion that there’s something he’s hiding in the water.

Thank you to Harlequin Australia for providing me with a copy of Stranger in the Lake, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review!

Charlotte has come from a hard life – desperately trying to look after her baby brother, while a child herself, with an absent father and drug addicted mother.  So when she marries wealthy, older man Paul, the small town they live in make no secret of their disdain.  She manages to hold her head high though, knowing her and Paul have something special together, no matter what rumours might circulate around them. However, when Charlotte discovers a body of a woman floating at the dock next to their house, Paul also becomes the subject of town suspicion.  It is, after all, the exact spot his  former wife was found drowned years before.
As Charlotte struggles to tie together the mystery of what happened to the woman in the lake, she’ll do anything to protect her husband.  After all, he couldn’t have done it.  Could he?
Stranger in the Lake was a roller coaster of a story with more than one mystery to unravel.   Even after I thought I’d guessed the ending a few times, I still never had it quite right!  I loved Charlotte as a character, she was smart and proved herself to be nothing at all like the town’s rumours made her out to be. Her brother, Chet was also a brilliant character who proved himself to be much more than I had initially assumed he would be.  Paul was eternally frustrating with his secrets and lies. I wanted to shake him on more than one occasion 😄
This is the first book I’ve read of Kimberley Belle’s but I’ll be checking out more of her works!
